EARTHQUAKES AND THE END TIMES
Earthquakes are described at various places throughout the Old Testament. One of them was when Moses called the people together to meet the LORD at Mt. Sinai.
“And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.” (Exodus 19:17-18)
When Korah rebelled against Moses God caused and earthquake and destroyed those who had rebelled.“But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD. And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.”(Numbers 16:30-32)
God also intervened when Jonathon came up against the Philistines.“And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.” (1st Samuel 14:15)
“So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.(1st Samuel 14:23)
In the New Testament it is revealed that an earthquake occurred at the moment when Jesus died on the cross. “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; (Matthew 27:50-51)And, also we read that an earthquake occurred when the stone was removed from his tomb in Matthew 28:2 “And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
When Paul and Silas were locked up in prison an earthquake took place and caused the doors to open. “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.” (Acts 16:25-26)
The following words of Jesus found in the gospels were in response to his disciples questioning him concerning the end times. Earthquakes are just one of the signs that Jesus describes in these scriptures.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. (Matthew 24:7)
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)
And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. (Luke 21:11)
In the book of Revelation it is revealed that when the 6th seal is opened there will be a great earthquake.
And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; (Revelation 6:12)
WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?
Earthquakes in several places will be one of the signs to watch for in the end times.
