DANIEL REFUSED THE KINGS FOOD

An interesting story concerning food is found in this first book of Daniel. King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, requested that certain children he had captured from the tribes of Israel should be prepared for the king’s service by Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs. He was to prepare them by feeding them well, teaching them science and wisdom and also the Chaldean language. Among these was Daniel who refused to eat the king’s rich foods and was physically rewarded for doing so. According to the Strong’s Hebrew Concordance (2235) the word pulse found in these scriptures is vegetables or better described as vegetables with pods.

Scripture:

And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God had brought Daniel into favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? Then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king. Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse (Pulse means vegetables) to eat, and water to drink. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat. Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse. As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. And in all matters of wisdom and understanding that the king enquired of them he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. (Daniel 1:5-20)

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?
We have learned that Daniel was in very good health because he refused to eat the king’s rich foods and ate vegetables or pods instead.

FOOD LAWS

FOOD LAWS

God gave us rules pertaining to which meats are good to be eaten and those which are not. This is what God’s word says concerning the eating of meat and which ones we are not to eat. The question is, are our bodies different then they were back then? Maybe since God made these bodies he knows what’s best for them.

We also discover that Isaiah speaks of God’s opinion concerning swine. It is my opinion that if we eat these meats it is not going to cause us to loose our salvation, but may cause us to be sick.

Scripture: And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is cloven footed, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat. Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. Whatsoever hath neither fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, , and the ospray, And the vulture, and the kite after his kind; Every raven after his kind; And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind, And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle, And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat. All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you. Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth; Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind. But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you. (Leviticus 11:1-23)

And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even. (Leviticus 11:27)

These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind, And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole. (Leviticus 11:29-30)

Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby. For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Leviticus 11:43-44)

This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth: To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten. (Leviticus 11:46-47)

(And in the book of Isaiah)
A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon alters of brick; Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine’s flesh, and the broth of abominable things is in their vessels; Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. (Isaiah 65:3-5)

They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD. (Isaiah 66:17)

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?
God gave instructions to the children of Israel as to which meats are good to be eaten and which are not. We have to ask ourselves are these laws still in effect.

Our Father appreciates the fact that you are trying. May God’s blessing be upon this
study of His word, Amen.

Foods Mentioned In The Bible

Watering the Garden

SOME FOODS MENTIONED IN THE BIBLE

Along with the creation of flesh man, God also created the food which he would need for sustenance. “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” Genesis 1:29
Foods are mentioned several places throughout the Bible. If you are curious, as I always am, I have listed a few of those scriptures below.

In a nutshell here are the foods mentioned: fruits, spices, nuts, almonds, grapes, pomegranates, figs, wine, corn, raisins, and cakes of figs, wheat, barley, flour, beans, lentils, parched pulse*, cheese, olive oil, milk, locusts, honey, fish, calves and sheep. If you see others let me know and I will add to the list.
*According to the Strong’s Hebrew Concordance (2235) the word pulse found in these scriptures is vegetables or better described as vegetables with pods.

Scripture:
And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. (Genesis 18:8)

And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds: (Genesis 43:11)

And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs. (Numbers 13:23)

Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. (1st Samuel 14:29)

Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. (1st Samuel 25:18)

Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, (2nd Samuel 17:28)

And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kind, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, the people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness. (2nd Samuel 17:29)

And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly. (2nd Chronicles 31:5)

And hast given them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. (Jeremiah 32:22)

Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. (Isaiah 7:15)

Mark 1:6 And John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a girdle of a skin about his lions; and he did eat locusts and wild honey. (Mark 1:6)
